International Assignment on Epidemic Intelligence at the Emergency Operations Centre of Portugal

During two weeks of their International Assignment, Dragana Plavsa, from Serbia, and Senad Begic, from Montenegro, MediPIET fellows from the 2nd Cohort, were deployed within General Directorate for Health (Direção-Geral da Saúde) of the Portuguese Ministry of Health where they were, with the supervision and support of Dr Paula Vasconcelos, got initiated with the Epidemic Intelligence activities within the Emergency Operations Centre of the Portuguese MoH and introduced to the respective working procedures with purpose of development and strengthening fellows capacities with regard to epidemic intelligence, risk assessment and risk communication, functioning of the Emergency Operations Centre and Generic Preparedness building.

During the international assignment fellows participated in the early threat detection and risk assessment, participated in the discussions, weekly meeting and the respective event task force; participated in the drafting of the weekly Report and of the communication with the regional epidemiologists and other scientists.

It is expected that the fellows will successfully translate the knowledge gained and skills developed into Plan for strengthening the Epidemic Intelligence, risk assessment / risk communication procedures and generic preparedness building in their’s home countries thus strengthening these very important parts of national epidemiological services and improving timeliness of detection and response to various public health threats with national and international impact.
